Performing well in HSC Mathematics Extension 2 requires continuous effort throughout the year. At the crux of it, success really boils down to two main concepts: understanding the concepts and exam technique. It is essential to properly understand not only the different concepts but also why and how they work. What you'll find is the why and how will really help you recognize when to use certain formulas or do certain things. Exam technique involves things like time management and general exam-taking strategies. Again, for further information, it is highly recommended to read the Study Guide written by Alec above.
Studying for HSC mathematics extension 2 is just like studying for any other mathematics course, it involves lots and lots of practice! Depending on your strengths, you may choose to do different types of questions. With weaker topics, it's important that you start with the basics and develop a strong set of fundamentals. The textbook provides very useful resources that can help you with this. Then as you get stronger, you can start to move onto past papers which test your overall understanding and serve as a good example for your school exams. That being said, it's also important to understand how to practice properly. Rather than doing questions for the sake of finishing them, the idea is to use them as learning points. Whether it be a more efficient method or any mistakes, always write down and make note of anything new that you learn. For further details, we highly recommend reading the HSC Maths Extension 2 Study Guide written by Alec (our Head of Extension 2!)
In general, the greater the difficulty a particular subject is - the more heavily it gets scaled. Being the highest level of mathematics offered at the HSC level, it is of no surprise that the HSC Mathematics Extension 2 course is one of the most highly scaling subjects offered. Roughly speaking, a 70-75/100 raw mark in the NESA exam will correspond to an E4 (90+) HSC mark - see the link below for data. That being said, scaling itself should be a very minor factor during your subject selection. What's always more important is how passionate you are for a particular subject and you should always pick subjects you enjoy doing.
Carefully designed by some of the best performers in the state, Project's HSC Mathematics Extension 2 LEAP Program is an intensive 12-week program involving 12 Exams and 12 Exam Reviews. Each exam is a mock trial of a 3-hour long HSC exam under strict exam conditions on campus under direct supervision. Each week, the exams will be sat and marked with extensive feedback detailing content gaps and exam technique. Then, in the following week, a formal exam review will be conducted where a teacher explains not only the questions but also the intuition behind each and every approach.
