Of course every student varies in their natural ability to understand mathematics, however HSC Maths Advanced is a very do-able course. With the right level of work and commitment, doing well in the course is extremely achievable. The Advanced Maths course takes relatively simple concepts and pushes students to apply them to questions that range in difficulty. Hence, as long as the student works hard to really understand the fundamentals of the topics they are learning, they will be able to tackle the course.
Beyond doing your homework, there are two main methods I would recommend for studying HSC Maths Advanced. Firstly, constant revision of topics you’ve learned previously will consolidate your understanding and help you maintain that understanding throughout the whole course. The most important skill a student can develop in this course is knowing how to tackle a difficult question. It’s not about rote-learning how to do certain difficult questions - it’s about knowing where to start. Hence, my second tip is to put your knowledge to practice by doing past papers. This is the best way to prepare yourself for upcoming exams and to test whether you really understand a topic.
HSC Maths Advanced scales decently well in comparison to most HSC subjects. However it must be noted that factors such as school rankings and cohort performances will have a great impact upon how this subject scales.
Our HSC Maths Advanced course runs for all four terms of the HSC year. The students learn the entire course in the first three terms of their HSC, and then in the final term they sit a ‘LEAP’ exam every week. Our syllabus experts create these exams which mirror what trial exams at school and the actual HSC exam will be like. Hence, each week students get realistic practise at sitting a trial or HSC exam. Each week, the student will also attend a 3-hour Exam Review lesson. In this lesson the teacher will go through the LEAP exam of the week in order to correct the students’ mistakes, and teach them how to prevent making similar mistakes in the future. Speaking from experience as a student at Project, LEAP is the most beneficial program a student can be part of. It taught me how to apply everything I had learnt in the exam setting, and prepared me for my upcoming trial and HSC exams.
