Year 11 Chemistry is all about fundamentals. Whilst a lot of the content in Year 11 does not explicitly re-appear in Year 12, many of the core concepts that you learn early in Chemistry are essential in excelling in HSC Chemistry. Peer marking, teaching and using textbooks/online resources can also help especially early on when the content is new. Practicing questions that examine these core concepts is the most effective way of ensuring that you understand and are able to apply these in exam conditions.
Year 11 and Year 12 Chemistry can be challenging at times, but often thats the beauty of studying these subjects. In all honesty, all subjects can be seen as difficult at first, but with time and practice, you learn to appreciate its relevance to your day to day lives.
This is a common question that gets asked by students, along with “which module is the easiest/hardest” and “what should I study most.” The majoirty of the concepts in the Chemistry syllabus are entwined and linked to each other. Understanding and applying all these topics and modules is essential in excelling in this subject. Not only will questions come from a variety of different topics in the modules, there can also be concepts that come from multiple modules. In order to synthesise well-written responses, you will need to learn and comprehend multiple chemistry topics, as focusing on only a few may limit your ability to answer complex questions.
Year 11 Chemistry focuses on building foundations in this sector of STEM, introducing you to concepts surrounding separation techniques, electron configurations and reactivities of elements and molecules. You will be spending the majority of the three terms delving into formulating equations and understanding the role of electrons and structure in the reactivity of different molecules.
Year 12 Chemistry will build on your understanding of Year 11 Chemistry (so make sure you have a sound understanding of prelim content!). The HSC Chemistry syllabus explores more in-depth and specific areas of molecules, with inorganic and organic molecules being the overarching sections that you will individually explore in Modules 5-7. The final module will tie in the previous three topics together with real world applications, giving you an appreciation of the importance and incredible way in which many everyday processes work.
